William Joseph Smith, 98, of Hopkinton died Friday April 28, 2006 at the U-Mass Medical Center in Worcester. Born in Hopkinton, Bill was the son of the late William H. and Mary A. (Foley) Smith. He was also the husband of the late Mary C. (Hancock) Smith.

A lifelong resident of Hopkinton and owner of Brown and Smiths in Hopkinton center, Bill loved to play golf and had played into his 80’s. A longtime member of St. John’s Church, He also had been a big baseball player in his youth and still continued to enjoy the game.

He is survived by 2 grandchildren; William P. Smith of Hopkinton and Rebecca Anne Smith of Worcester. He is also predeceased by a son James Smith who passed away in 2005 and a brother John Smith.

Visitation hours will be held on Monday May 1, 2006 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at the Chesmore Funeral Home, 57 Hayden Rowe St., Hopkinton. A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, May 2, 2006 at 9:00 am in St. John’s Church in Hopkinton. Burial will follow in Evergreen Cemetery in Hopkinton.
