Walter C. Wood
HOPKINTON – Retired U.S. Army Lt. Col. Walter C. Wood, 87, a lifelong Hopkinton resident, died Friday, Dec. 8, 2006.
He was the husband of Evelyn (Haynes) Wood for 65 years.
He was a graduate of Hopkinton High School, Class of 1937, O.C.S., Coast artillery in 1942, of Northeastern University in 1953 and of Command General Staff College in 1996. He served in the U.S. Army from 1941-1979.
He was manager-owner of Wood’s Friendly Superette in Hopkinton for 20 years. Then he taught business and social science at Hopkinton High School for 13 years and continued as a substitute teacher until he was 80.
His philosophy was only one word: “we,” never “me.” He will be remembered for his kind generosity, easy smile and warm, loving ways.
Besides his wife, he leaves a son, Peter Wood of Mount Pleasant, S.C.; two daughters, Lucinda Miller of Alton, N.H., and Gail Fawson of Hopkinton; a sister, Helen Sleeper of Concord, N.H.; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours are Monday, Dec. 11, from 4 to 7 p.m., at the Chesmore Funeral Home, 57 Hayden Rowe St., Hopkinton.
A funeral service will take place Tuesday, Dec. 12, at 10 a.m., at the funeral home. Burial will follow in the family lot in Mount Auburn Cemetery with full military honors.
