Sophia B. Volkers, 76, of Holliston and formerly of Medway, died
Tuesday, June 24, 2008 at the home of her daughter, after a 2 month
battle with cancer. She was the wife of the late Johannes T. Volkers who
passed away in 1996.

Born in Rotterdam, Holland, she was the daughter of the late Sophia
(Thoonsen) and Johannes Catherinus VanZandwijk. Mrs. Volkers was a
survivor of the Holocaust. She was an active singer for many years at
Saint Mary’s Church and the Fatima Shrine, a member of the Hollistones
and the Baptist Church Choir. She volunteered and was very active at the
Holliston Senior Center and the Fatima Shrine.

She is survived by her daughter, Caroline McGrath and husband, Robert of
Holliston, a sister; Joke Burger of Ridderkerk, Netherlands and a
granddaughter Kaitlin McGrath of Holliston. She is also survived by 2
nephews, Peter and Eric Burger of the Netherlands.

Visiting hours will be Thursday, June 26, 2008 from 5 to 7 pm at the
Chesmore Funeral Home, 854 Washington St., (Rt. 126) Holliston. A mass
of Christian burial will be celebrated Friday at 10:30 am in Saint
Mary’s Church, Washington Street, Holliston. Burial will follow in the
parish cemetery.
