Barbara L. (Kingsbury) Bates passed away peacefully on August 31, 2023, just seven days before her 101st birthday on  September 7th. Barbara was born and raised in Holliston. She graduated from Holliston High School, Class of 1940, and was the last remaining member of her class. She graduated as a member of the Pro Merito Society having maintained an average grade of 90 or above in all subjects during her four years of high school.

Barbara was the daughter of the late Lee and Florence (Sherman) Kingsbury.  She is predeceased by her husband, Donald F. Bates, who passed away in 1990. They were married for 50 years. Barbara is survived by her daughter, Deborah, and companion Paul, her son, Donald C Bates and wife Virginia; grandchildren, Brenda Lee Bates, David Bates and wife Jessica, great-grandchildren, Breanna Lee Bates, Kyle Bates, and Lily Bates; her brothers, Dana and David Kingsbury. She was predeceased by her step-brother, Marine Lieutenant Edward Spencer; her brother, Robert Kingsbury, and sisters, Grace Chick and Phyllis Kingsbury.

Barbara was married on September 7, 1940, and her husband enlisted in the Navy.  She worked at Bates News Co. driving trucks and delivering newspapers and magazines until he returned after the war in 1945. Barbara and Don were longtime members of the Framingham Country Club from 1945-1970. She lived in Framingham all her married life before returning to Holliston in 2007. In Holliston, she lived with her daughter and loved their Scottie dog, Miss Duffy, who was always with her at home and on many road trips around New England.  Mom, may you rest in peace with Dad and Duffy, your spirit shining in the darkness.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, September 19th 6-8 pm at the Chesmore Funeral Home of Holliston, 854 Washington St. Burial will be held privately. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the MSPCA, https://www.mspca.org/donate-now/
