John Bennett Newbold, 93, of Plainville, and formerly of Holliston and South Yarmouth, passed away on Saturday, May 24, 2025. Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late Maude (Bennett) and Roland Newbold. He was the devoted husband of 62 years to the late Jean (Boggs) Newbold. Their love story began over a game of ping-pong at church, and they married in Philadelphia in 1955.
John served in the Army during the Korean War. He earned his Master of Science in Engineering from Northeastern University and built a successful career as a reliability engineer at Raytheon Technologies Corp. John and Jean raised their three children in Holliston and later in life, enjoyed nine wonderful years in South Yarmouth with their beloved dog, Maggie. John was living with his daughter, Sue, and son-in-law, Brian, in Plainville for the past seven years.
A man of deep faith, John was an active member of the Holliston Congregational Church for over sixty years, serving faithfully on numerous committees. He also contributed his time and insight as a staff member of the Massachusetts Congregational Conference on Mission for four years. His work helped connect church members from across the six New England states with global mission efforts of the United Church of Christ (UCC). John remained active and sharp well into his later years—still driving and doing taxes as recently as last year. He loved gardening, feeding the birds, and reading—especially books about history,
John is survived by two daughters, Laura Jean Newbold of Brookline and Susan Elizabeth Portmann and her husband Brian of Plainville. He also leaves behind two grandchildren, Marco and Nika Gorini. He is predeceased by his son, John B. Newbold Jr.
A graveside service will be held on Friday, August 8th at 11:00 a.m. at Lake Grove Cemetery in Holliston. Arrangements are under the care of the Chesmore Funeral Home of Holliston. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First Congregational Church, 725 Washington St. Holliston, MA 01746
