Lucy (Oulohojian) Almasian, 84, loving wife, mother, and grandmother, died peacefully on Thursday August 11, 2016 after a courageous battle with cancer. She was born in Michigan on March 18, 1932, the daughter of Boghos and Sarah (Goshgarian) Oulohojian, Armenian immigrants and survivors of the Armenian Genocide.

Her youth was spent in Worcester and then Marlboro where her father owned a dairy. Early on she learned the value of hard work, excelled in academics and graduated Valedictorian of her high school class at Marlboro High School. Lucy continued her education at Anna Maria College on an academic scholarship majoring in Biology with a minor in Chemistry, finishing Summa Cum Laude. Her desire to teach High School math led her to take various classes at Harvard Extension School, BC, BU and Worcester State College, where she received a Masters in Education. She taught math at Marlboro HS, Natick HS, Holliston Jr College, and UVM, and she authored a Geometry textbook.

Lucy was the first female summer director at Camp Haiastan in Franklin, a youth camp aimed at preserving Armenian heritage and culture.

She was also very involved in the Armenian Youth Federation (AYF), and was quite an athlete. Lucy is still listed among the top high-scorers of the annual AYF Olympic Games held here in the Northeast each September.

After her marriage to Joe Almasian of Whitinsville, they settled in Sherborn and raised their family. In the over 50 years she lived there, she was very active in the community where she served on numerous town committees, held Boy and Girl Scout leadership positions, was an original member of the Sherborn Senior Citizens, and a member of the Widows and Orphans organization. Lucy presided as the Sherborn Town Clerk for 21 years. She was a member of the Massachusetts Town Clerks Association where she was Treasurer for 5 years, and also served as President of the Middlesex County Town Clerks Association. Lucy was also a Justice of the Peace and presided over many weddings. In retirement, Lucy kept her math skills sharp by preparing taxes at H&R Block for many years.

Lucy was a long standing member of the Soorp Asdvadzadzin Armenian Church of Whitinsville, MA where she served on the Board of Trustees, and always worked hard to make the annual picnic and bazaar a success.

Lucy is predeceased by her husband Joe, her sisters Angel and Mariam, and brothers Hampartsoum and Kazar. She is survived by her three children: Sosie and husband Steve Megerdichian, Joseph Almasian and wife Kim, and Ani Gigarjian. She was a devoted grandmother to her seven grandchildren: Taline, Armen, Anoush, Haig, Aznive, Meline’ and Tamar, and loved sharing in their various school and athletic achievements. “Grandma Lucy” will be greatly missed.

Lucy had a “green thumb” and her passion for gardening showed in her plethora of plants and flowers around the house. She loved to read, and instilled a focus of education in her children and grandchildren. Lucy was passionate about her Armenian heritage and was proud to share that with those she loved. Her drive and devotion to the things she held so dear will be greatly missed.
