Robert E. Garvin

December 7, 1931 - December 22, 2025

Visitation: Saturday, January 10th 12pm-2pm at Chesmore Funeral Home of Hopkinton

Robert E. Garvin, 94, of West Newton, passed away peacefully at his home on December 22, 2025, surrounded by his loved ones. Born in Newton, Bob spent his entire life in the community he loved.

Bob often joked that his tenth birthday—December 7, 1941—was “ruined” by the bombing of Pearl Harbor, a story he loved to tell and a perfect example of his dry, understated sense of humor. One of his favorite one-liners, which he asked to be included in his farewell, summed him up simply and perfectly: “It’s all over…”

Bob worked for many years as a wrecker driver for the City of Newton, a job he genuinely loved. Through his work, he formed lifelong friendships and became well known and respected throughout the city. Though Bob never married, family was always at the center of his life. He shared a particularly close bond with his older sister, Eleanor (Garvin) Martin, who cared for him during his childhood while their mother was hospitalized with tuberculosis. In later years, that care came full circle, as Bob lovingly supported Eleanor as she aged and needed more help. Bob was always there for his family, ready to help in any way he could.

A natural mechanic and builder, Bob found joy in fixing cars for relatives and friends and in assembling and repairing things at home. His projects included building a television, radios, and countless plastic models. In his younger years, he also enjoyed horseback riding.

In his final year, Bob’s wish to remain at home was made possible by his incredible personal care assistant, Ledy, and a compassionate hospice team through Dignity Hospice. Their kindness and dedication allowed him to spend his last days in the comfort of his home, surrounded by familiarity and peace. Bob also cherished life’s simple pleasures, especially enjoying a beer or a gin and tonic at Tommy Doyle’s. He was a proud “mush” who grew up down “The Lake” in Newton and loved reminiscing about those early years.

Bob was the youngest of four siblings, all of whom predeceased him. He is survived by many loving nieces and nephews who will remember him fondly, carry his stories forward, and smile at his quiet humor.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, January 10th, from 12:00-2:00 p.m. at Chesmore Funeral Home of Hopkinton.
