Robert Dean Stueart, 89, of Holliston, MA, passed away on Monday, October 14, 2024. Born in Monticello, Arkansas, on 6/1/1935, he was the son of the late Lois (Roberts) and Ira Stueart. He was the husband of 64 years to Marie- Luise ( Hille) Stueart.Robert was a visionary leader in the field of Library and Information Sciences. He served as Dean at Simmons College, where he was renowned for his dedication to academic excellence, and his pioneering contributions to the profession. His influence extended beyond the walls of the college, where he mentored many students, particularly from Asia, shaping their futures and empowering them to reach their full potential. Perhaps his greatest international work was done in Thailand, where he worked closely with the royal family to develop graduate education programs throughout the country. He was also a published author, having written the leading textbooks on Library Management and International Librarianship . He had many other important professional distinctions, including being An Honorary Member of the American Library Association and President of IFLA.Robert had a profound passion for travel, having explored over 50 countries throughout his life. His journeys took him to far corners of the globe, where he embraced new cultures, made lifelong connections, and gained a wealth of knowledge and experiences. He started his career while in the army, 1957, as a student in the Monterey Russian Foreign Language Program, in 1957. As a result, he was fluent in Russian.Robert’s love of reading was something he shared with his children. Attending many Library conferences around the world, he would often come home with books signed by the author, including Judy Blume. He also took pleasure in working in his garden and writing calligraphy. Above all, Robert was a family man.In addition to his wife, Robert is survived by two children, Christian Stueart and Sabine Stueart Jonsson, all of Holliston. He also leaves behind his sister, Debora Stueart, and two grandchildren, Annika and Magnus Jonsson.A celebration of Robert’s life will take place at a later date.
