Ira W. Leighton Jr., 67, of Holliston, passed away in Arlington, Virginia; while away on business, on Friday, July 26, 2013. He was the son of the late Mary (Caloggero) and Ira W. Leighton Sr. He was the husband of 40 years to the late Maureen (Kane) Leighton who passed in October 2008.

Raised in Watertown, Ira had worked as a Deputy Regional Administrator for the EPA. During his 41 years of public service, Ira was truly a force for environmental protection and an institution within the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Ira’s dedication and leadership made the water, land, and air cleaner. Ira was innovative, practical, and results-oriented and as a result he improved the quality of life for every New Englander.

He is survived by two children, Ira William Leighton III, and Jason Leo Leighton of Natick; 1 sister, Marilyn McMillan and her husband Frederick of Ayer; 1 grandchild, Blake Anthony Leighton; daughter in law Tereza Uliana of Framingham and a nephew Tyler McMillan.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, July 31st and Thursday, August 1st from 4-8p.m. at the Chesmore Funeral Home of Holliston, 854 Washington St. (Rt. 16) www.ChesmoreFuneralHome.com A funeral mass will celebrated at 10:30a.m. on Friday August 2nd at St. Mary’s Church of Holliston.
