Hopkinton – Zarouhi “Rose” Vartanian, 104, died November 12, 2004 at the
Geriatric Authority of Milford.
She was the wife of the late Lazarous Vartanian who died in 1971. Born in
Adana, Armenia, she was the daughter of Khachador and Sima (Azadian)
Arakelian.
In 1915 she, along with her family, escaped the Armenian Genocide. She
was able to continue her education at Beirut University in Lebanon where she
learned English, French and Arabic languages.
Rose married and in 1921 they settled in Watertown, then moved to
Hopkinton in 1935 where they purchased 30 acres to start at poultry farm.
Mrs. Vartanian was the holder of Hopkinton’s Boston Post Cane since 2001.
This cane is presented to the oldest resident of the town by the Council on
Aging.
She was a member of the First Congregational Church of Hopkinton, the
Rebeccas and many Armenian organizations. She had especially enjoyed the
ocean and Armenian picnics.
She is survived by her daughters; Rose Smith of Florida and New Hampshire,
Alice Reardon of Hopkinton and Angel Doherty of Hopkinton, 14
grandchildren, many great grandchildren and 3 great
great grandchildren.
She was the mother of the late Gladys Robinson of Hopkinton.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, November 16 at 11:00 a.m. at the
Chesmore Funeral Home, 57 Hayden Rowe St., Hopkinton
Burial will follow in Mt. Auburn Cemetery, Hopkinton.
Calling hours will be Monday from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.
