Holliston-

Sumner H. Bernstein, 87, of Holliston, passed away Friday, June 22, 2018 at Milford Regional Medical Center. Born in Brookline, he was the son of the late Gertrude (Davis) and Israel Bernstein. He was devoted to his late wife Mary C. (Ciccarelli) Bernstein and to his daughter, the late Janet M. Bernstein. He is survived by his sister Roberta Hausman of Stanley, Kansas and her five children, as well as many relatives on his wife’s side.

As a young man, Mr. Bernstein played football for Brookline High School and then joined the U.S. Army and served in Korea in the Medical Field Service as a Private First Class. Following active duty, he continued with the Army Reserve for nearly 40 years, achieving the rank of Corporal.

He was employed at Natick Army Labs in the Navy Clothing and Textile Research Facility where he worked on flame-retardant clothing, adapted for use by fire departments. He met Mary at the Army Labs and they settled in Holliston in 1969.  Mr. Bernstein was proud of his service to his country and continued to serve as an Officer in the VFW as well as in the Auxiliary Police. He loved history and volunteered in the Holliston Public Library research room.

A graveside service and burial will be held on Wednesday, June 27th at 2:30 p.m. at Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne. Arrangements are under the care of the Chesmore Funeral Home of Holliston. www.ChesmoreFuneralHome.com
