Sally Ann Lunter (Berant), 90, of Holliston passed away peacefully – with her family present – at UMass Medical Center in Worcester, MA on Wednesday, August 21, 2024. Her unexpected death was the result of cardiac arrest brought on by a severe allergic reaction to multiple bee stings while working in her beloved garden. Sally was born on July 9, 1934, in Detroit, MI, the eldest daughter of the late Irene (Hoppe) and Louis Berant. She was also the wife of 43 years to the late Thomas J. Lunter who passed in 1997.
Sally attended parochial schools in Detroit. A successful and proud graduate of St. Anthony’s High, Sally was known for her exceptional singing (highest Soprano), being the star of her high school play, and active participation on the girls’ basketball team. She met the love of her life, Tom Lunter while on a blind date and the two were married in October 1954. Upon completion of Tom’s technical training with Honeywell Corporation in Boston, MA, Sally excitedly moved with him to Torrance, CA where she tirelessly helped him pursue his career and proudly raise five children. The Lunter family ultimately settled in Holliston where Sally lived for more than 57 years.
In addition to her singing, Sally was known for her gorgeous flower gardens and was an active and happy participant in her children’s artistic, educational, and athletic endeavors. She also was an active volunteer in many Town and Holliston Public Schools’ activities. Sally gained neighborhood fame as the remarkable, older woman who still mowed her own lawn up until age 89 – by choice – and her welcoming open-door policy where there was always room for another to join the boisterous Lunter clan. She was a faithful member of St. Mary’s Parish where she jubilantly sang in the church choir during her earlier years and was a frequent visitor to the Town Senior Center where she couldn’t resist the food bargains and interesting conversations. She prided herself on successfully learning modern technologies, avidly reading numerous books weekly, and for her worldwide travel experiences, including trips to six of the seven continents, and domestic treks across North America’s most spectacular national parks and wilderness areas such as those in Alaska and Canada. She was generous beyond compare and could never arrive anywhere empty-handed. She will be missed for her infectious laughter, a smile that could light up a room, selfless generosity, strong spiritual faith, and ability to forge life-long friendships and keep her family near and far together.
Sally is survived by her daughter, Susan Thompson, and her husband, Richard of Framingham, MA; sons, Michael Lunter and his partner, Heather Sabourin of West Lebanon, NH; Robert Lunter and his partner, Ellen Smith of Milford, MA; and John Lunter and his late wife, Pamela (Jaworski) of North Attleborough, MA and Punta Gorda, FL; as well as daughter, Patty Stocker and her fiancé, Joseph D’Arco of Arlington, MA. She also leaves behind eight grandchildren: Ryan Thompson; Jason Huff, and his wife, Marbella; Evan Lunter, and his wife, Colleen; Christopher Lunter and his wife, Lindsay; Todd Lunter and his wife, Ginamarie Spiridigliozzi; Alexander Lunter; Clay Stocker; and Luke Stocker. She is also survived by two great-grandchildren; Delilah Lunter and Lillian Lunter; and sisters, Diane Kurzava and her husband, Jerry, and Beverly Raub, and her husband, Dave; and brother James Berant – all of the Detroit, MI area. She also leaves behind several nieces and nephews as well as her decades-long dear friends, Barbara and Al Savino. In addition to her husband and parents, Sally was predeceased by her dear sister, Jeanette Radzwion.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, September 4th from 4:00-7:00 p.m. at the Chesmore Funeral Home of Holliston, 854 Washington St. A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, September 5th at 11:00 a.m. at Saint Mary’s Church of Holliston. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery. Sally also requested that, upon her passing, people wear colorful clothes to her Wake and Funeral. She was always a proponent of brighter hues.
