Holliston-
Ruth Vernon, 102, passed away?Tuesday, August 27, 2013?at the Framingham Union Hospital. Ruth was born in Belmont and moved to Holliston when she was one year old. At her 100th Birthday party, she received the “Boston Post Cane,” designating her as the oldest resident of Holliston. Ruth was married to Howard (Punk) Vernon who passed in 1958.?
Throughout her long life, Ruth enjoyed and was a part of a large extended family. On the occasion of her most recent birthday, all of her family and extended family gathered at her son Peter’s house on Mechanic St. Her parties were almost always attended by over a hundred friends and relatives.?
After graduating from Holliston High School in 1928, Ruth worked for John Hancock Insurance Co. in Boston. Later on, she worked for many years at the Holliston High School Cafeteria; where she developed many lifelong friendships. Ruth was active in the Rosalie Rebekah Lodge and was a past Noble Grand.?
The consignment shop at the First Congregational Church was of special interest to her. She volunteered at the Clothes Closet for many years. On the occasion of her 100th birthday, friends contributed to the renovation of the Clothes Closet facility. A plaque was placed in the Clothes Closet to this effect. Everyone in Holliston knew Ruth. Over the course of 100 years, she managed to make an impact on so many lives in the community. She loved Holliston?and Holliston loved her.?
