Westborough- Rosemary Gannon, 95, died at the Beaumont Nursing Center after a period of declining health. Born in Worcester, MA. She was the daughter of the late Dr. John F. and Mary Ellen (O’Connell) Gannon. She moved to Pittsfield, MA. In 1920 with her family upon appointment of her father as superintendent of schools. She was a 1928 graduate Pittsfield High School and a 1933 graduate of Smith College. She also received her master’s degree from Colombia University in 1939.
For over 40 years, she was involved in education as a teacher and director of the Bennett Nursery School and Professor of Child Study at Bennett College in Millbrook, NY. While there, she served on many boards of local and national organizations associated with teacher education in addition to her interests in Day Care Centers and Head Start. She was especially active as a founding lifetime board member of Dutchess Day School in Millbrook.
Upon her retirement from Bennett College in 1977, Ms. Gannon moved to Falmouth on Cape Cod. She continued her involvement with education as a founding board member at Falmouth Academy and as a faithful volunteer at libraries in West Falmouth and at Christ the King Church in Mashpee where she was a loyal communicant.
She loved her family dearly and especially enjoyed the younger members. She was active in the Smith College Alumnae Club on Cape Cod and enjoyed reading, photography and needlepoint.
She leaves three nephews, William A. (Andy) St. James and his wife Andrea of Holliston, John F. Gannon and his wife Valerie of Shrewsbury, and Stephen T. Gannon and his wife Betty of Richmond, VA.; three great nieces , Nancy Kirshe of Lakewood Ranch, FL., Jill Labon of Sandwich, and Jennifer Picarillo of Grafton; five great nephews; Jefferey Gannon of Sherborn, Michael Gannon of Burbank, CA., Peter Gannon of Shrewsbury, John Gannon of Richmond, VA., and Thomas Gannon of Richmond, VA. She also leaves grand nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her sister Eleanor St. James and her brothers; Rev. Msg. John F. Gannon, P.A., Philip J. Gannon and Thomas V. Gannon.
A liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, November 29, 2005 at 10:00 am at St. Mary’s Church, Washington St. Holliston, MA. Burial will follow at St. John’s cemetery in Worcester, MA. There will be no calling hours. Arrangements are under the direction of the Chesmore Funeral Home of Holliston. Memorial donations may be made to the charity of one’s choice.
