Mertice Eileen Stratton, 84, passed away at Westborough Community Health on Monday, May 17, 2010, surrounded by her family. This was following a long battle with Alzheimer’s Disease.

She was born February 2, 1926 in the town of Hopkinton to the late Elmer and Alice (Kimball) MacKay. She was one of eleven children. She was a graduate of Westborough High School in 1943. On June 15, 1946 she was united in marriage to Roy D. Stratton in Hopkinton, MA. They have been married for almost 65 years.

Prior to marriage, Mertice worked for a short time at Kenworthy Inc. as a stock clerk, and at BayState Abrasives Corporation, in Westborough, MA. Later in life she worked at Fenwal, Inc., Ashland, MA, processing inventories of U. S. Government contract end items for shipment. During 1988, she retired from Fenwal Inc. and devoted her time to enjoying her family and grandchildren.

In her youth, she sang as a member in the Church Choir at St. Steven’s Episcopal Church with her sister Barbara MacKay. Later on she became a member of the St. Paul’s Episcopal Church and was a Sunday school teacher for several years. She also belonged to the Hopkinton Women’s Club and took courses in Red Cross. She loved all types of music, singing and writing. She also loved nature, babies and children.

Mertice’s husband Roy, her children and their spouses including two grandchildren survive. Janis and Charles Bunting of Grafton, Susan and Philip George, and grandson Bryan of Upton, Roy Jr. and Lisa Stratton, and granddaughter Victoria of Upton

Her surviving siblings include the following: Charles, Duncan, and Preston MacKay and many nieces, nephews, and other relatives. Predeceasing Mertice are her parents, three brothers, Elston, Donald, and Wilbur, and four sisters Cora, Ruth, Muriel and Barbara.

Visitation hours will be from the Chesmore Funeral Home 57 Hayden Rowe St. Hopkinton on Wednesday May 26, 2010 from 9:00 – 10:30. A service will follow in the Funeral Home at 11:00 am. Relatives and friends are welcome. A private burial will follow after at the Evergreen Cemetery in Woodville, MA.

She was much beloved, and will be missed by those whose lives she touched.
