Holliston-
Leland W. “Bud” Morse, 91, longtime resident of Holliston, died suddenly, January 1, 2009. Born in 1917, in Springfield, MA. He was the son of Harold M. and Mildred (Derbyshire) Morse.

Bud grew up in W. Springfield and helped build the dykes along the CT. River. He also drove for Frankie Carle and his band in the late 30’s when Mr. Carle had a regional band that played throughout New England. He met his late wife Helen (Peckham) Morse of 54 years while stationed at Camp Edwards and they married in 1944. He was a proud member of the U.S. Army Infantry and reached the rank of 1st Sergeant. He served in the European Theatre and earned a Purple Heart.

After the war, Helen and Bud made their home in Holliston, Helen’s hometown. Bud lived there for over 60 years. He was the owner for several years of Dorothy’s Donut Shop in Natick, worked at Carlings Brewing Co. until the facility closed, and worked the longest at Donahue Corp, and now at Informa Financial Companies where he still worked part time. He was on the Board of Directors for Lake Grove Cemetery. At 91, he still lived an active and independent life, a life influenced by The Depression and the Army.

His biggest interests were his vegetable garden and watching and listening to sports, which he shared with his wife. He also spent much time as the handyman in his old house. He had been involved with the Cub Scouts and Little League in the 50’s.

He is survived by his children, Richard Morse and Carol Kosicki and her husband George Kosicki of Holliston, and a sister, Shirley and her husband Al Ouimet of Hampden, MA. His other sister Phyllis Bardsley is deceased. He is the brother in law of Nancy and Jack Morris of Monument Beach and Clint Clark of Medfield and the late Jean Clark. He also leaves behind several nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours will be held Tuesday, January 6, from 2-4 and 6-8p.m. at the Chesmore Funeral Home of Holliston, 854 Washington St. www.ChesmoreFuneralHome.com. A graveside service with military honors will be held in the spring at Lake Grove Cemetery. Donations may be made in Bud’s memory to the Salvation Army, 35 Concord Street Framingham, MA 01702
