Karen Lee (Ellis) Blaney, 61, of Vernon, beloved wife of Kevin John Blaney, passed away peacefully, after a courageous battle with cancer, on Saturday, February 25, 2023. Her beloved husband Kevin passed away an hour later with their family at his side. Karen was born on May 5, 1961 in Athol, Massachusetts, one of three loving children of Jane (Brunell) Ellis of Athol, MA, and the late William P. Ellis.

She was raised in Athol, attended local schools, and was a graduate of Athol High School, Class of 1979. Karen then graduated from Johnson & Wales University in Rhode Island, having earned her Culinary Arts degree in 1983. She met the love of her life, Kevin John Blaney while attending Johnson & Wales. Karen was employed as a Pastry Chef for several different restaurants and hotels across the country. Most recently, she was employed by the Vernon Board of Education, working at Vernon Center Middle School. Along with raising and caring for her family, Karen was a voracious reader, home improvement planner & technician, and an avid gardener. She enjoyed baking in her own kitchen but one of her greatest joys was worshiping the sun by the pool.

In addition to her mother Jane, Karen is survived by her two children: Bill Blaney of East Hartford and Leah Blaney and her partner Chris of Vernon, her brother, Tom Ellis and his wife Elizabeth Nolan of Kittery, ME, her brother-in-law Lawrence Savell of Croton-on-Hudson, NY, and several nieces, nephews, cousins and many wonderful friends and colleagues. In addition to her father William, she was predeceased by her loving daughter Kathleen “Kate” Blaney and her sister Cathy Savell.

Calling hours will be at the Ladd-Turkington & Carmon Funeral Home, 551 Talcottville Road in Vernon on Sunday, March 5, 2023, from 2-5 pm with a service at 4:30. Private burial will be in Athol, Massachusetts, at the request of the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Ronald MacDonald House or to the American Cancer Society.
