Joseph “Joe” Chicco, 58, of Bellingham, MA, passed away on Sunday, June 16, 2024 surrounded by family. Born in Waltham, MA, he was the son of Audrey (McFarland) and James Chicco. He was the fiancé of Dyan L. Fitzgerald (Melanson) of Bellingham.

Joe grew up in Waltham and attended Waltham Vocational School where he trained to become a mechanic, driven by his deep love for rebuilding classic cars. Joe later brought his talents and incredible skill for working on cars to the community when he opened his own garage. Joe would spend countless hours on-the-clock (and off-the-clock), repairing cars of not just the community, but also of his family and friends as a selfless gesture. In his “off hours”, Joe could be found working in his garden, playing his drums, spending time with his four children, or hitting the open road on his motorcycle with his fiancée, enjoying that sense of freedom and adventure it brought to him.

While Joe mastered the skill of being an excellent mechanic, he also mastered and found tremendous joy in gardening and creating beautiful landscapes that were the envy of the neighborhood; something that he learned from his father. Knowing how important it was to impart knowledge, skill, and talents to your children, Joe made sure that he filled his time by working very hard to share a piece of himself with his children.

Joe’s knowledge around cars and perfecting his garden was long admired by his first born, Tara, as she grew to follow in her father’s footsteps and will continue to bring his passions to life. Joe’s son Jim, also learned the special talent of working on cars and motorcycles by standing by his Dad’s side over the years as he taught him everything that he knew so that Jim could also see the value in knowing his trade.

Often the times Joe spent outside, whether it be working in the garden or just enjoying nature, would draw wild animals into the yard that he would want to keep and care for. This becoming one with nature was a gentle side of him that his youngest daughter, Renee, quickly admired about her Dad. She would often help to contribute to this homegrown shelter by bringing animals home for him to take care of for her.

As a self-taught drummer, Joe played in several bands throughout his life and shared his love for music with many. Playing the drums and never missing an opportunity to sing are talents that his daughter Angela had inherited proudly from her Dad as they shared many moments of singing karaoke; now she will continue to carry the tune in his memory. His family will always remember the joyful times spent singing classic covers together, with Joe leading the way on Vocals. Joe’s knowledge, skills, and talents will live on in each of his children. To all, Joe was loved and very well known for his infectious sense of humor and ability to make anyone laugh. Joe was always the life of the party and his outgoing spirit, deep care for others, and relentless pursuit of joy in life will live on in our memories. Joe’s smile, sense of humor, dance moves, and ability to brighten anyone’s day will be truly missed.

In addition to his fiancée, Joe is survived by his children Tara Chicco, Angela Chicco (and her fiancé Tony), Renee (Chicco) Cabral (and her husband Matthew), James “Jim” Chicco (and his girlfriend Dottie), and his stepdaughter Sara (Fitzgerald) Becker (and her husband Jarrid) along with his grandchildren Willow, Rowan, Ivy, Axel, Chloe, Lilly, Ava and Brayden. Joe is also survived by his siblings, James Chicco (and his wife Kim), Anthony Chicco, Deborah Flateau, and Edward Wild, along with his many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins.

A celebration of Joe’s life will take place on June 29, 2024, from 12:00pm-4:00pm at the Chesmore Funeral Home of Hopkinton, 57 Hayden Rowe St, Hopkinton MA.
