Holliston –
Janice Lee Purington, 77, passed away on Tuesday, November 13, 2018 at MetroWest Framingham in ICU surrounded by her family. Born in Framingham, she was the daughter of the late Mary A. (Springham) and Ralph A. Purington of Holliston.
Janice graduated in 1959 from Holliston High School, where she was a member of the National Honor Society, Pro Merito Society and was a Literary Editor of the Yearbook. She attended Northeastern University and graduated Cum Laude in 1964. After college, she entered the Peace Corps and served from 1964 to 1966 in San Isidro, Costa Rica, teaching English at a school that she helped to establish. When she returned to the U.S., she worked at the Boston Herald News, the Framingham News, Keefe Tech Night School as an ESL teacher and for the Department of Corrections as a GED teacher at MCI Framingham and MCI Norfolk.
Janice is survived by her sister, Diane Parrella and her husband, Robert of Medway; niece, Michelle Parrella of Milford; nephew (Godson), Scott Parrella and his wife, Jennifer; great nephews, Michael and Matthew Parrella of Franklin; niece Danielle Purington and nephew Dylan Purington of Maine; and goddaughter Janice Elizondo of Perez, San Jose, Costa Rica. She was predeceased by her brother Lt. Cmdr. David A. Purington, U.S. Navy and nephew David A. Purington, Jr.
Janice loved teaching and was an avid reader. She enjoyed Mahjong with friends, dancing, the arts and theater.
Private burial services will be held at Lake Grove Cemetery. Arrangements are under the care of the Chesmore Funeral Home of Holliston.
