Hopkinton-

Gregory Paul Murphy, 63, of Hopkinton, passed away July 27, 2016 at the Rose Monahan Hospice Home in Worcester. Born in California, he was the son of Ella Rae (Fink) Murphy of Charlottesville, VA. and the late James Murphy. He was the husband of 39 years to Robin (Reich) Murphy of Hopkinton.

Gregory received his MS in Biochemistry from the University of Rhode Island in 1977 and began his career as a scientist. He went on to work for Waters Corporation in Milford in 1979. Throughout his long and successful career he was deeply respected by the many colleagues he collaborated with and mentored. He enjoyed the outdoors and took great pride in his home. He was an expert woodworker and his home is filled with his handcrafted work, including carpentry, wood bowls, and pepper grinders. He could often be seen on his tractor in his yard, driving and maintaining his cars, and fixing anything that needed to be fixed. He was adventurous, and traveled the world for business & pleasure. He was a loving father and husband and his family was his first priority.

“He was an inveterate tinkerer and inventor, a lover of gadgetry and mechanical devices, a designer of machines and contraptions of all sorts, a dreamer of big dreams. He thrived on solving complex problems, prided himself on coming up with novel solutions. The kinds of things other people would never think of in a million years.” Written by Daniel James Brown.

Besides his wife and his mother, he is survived by his daughter, Stephanie and her partner Brian of Lebanon, NH; his sister, Terri Ellison of Charlottesville, VA as well as 4 nieces.

A celebration of his life will take place in late August, details forthcoming. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to either the International Thyroid Oncology Group (ITOG) at http://www.itog.org/donation, or to Rose Monahan Hospice Home c/o VNA Network, http://www.vnacarenetwork.org/services/hospice/rose Arrangements are under the care of the Chesmore Funeral Home of Hopkinton, www.ChesmoreFuneralHome.com
