George A. Furlong, 75, of Eastham, MA died peacefully surrounded by his loving family at New England Sinai hospital on May 6, 2015, after a lengthy illness. He was born on September 18, 1939, the son of George and Beatrice (Finlay) Furlong in Framingham, MA.
George was raised in Dorchester, MA and entered the service after High School. He was in the U.S. Air Force from 1957-1961 working on top secret projects. While stationed in England he raced sports cars and motorcycles on the Thames River. He worked ground support with the Air Force, where they honed his mechanical skills to genius level, leading to creation of multiple mechanical patents for various companies during his lifetime.
After his discharge, George worked for the Polaroid Corporation until 1979 as a Draftsman and then as an Engineer after receiving his Engineering degree from Northeastern College. He was Chief Engineer for Precision in Rounds, Inc. in Holliston, MA for 10 years and started his own design firm, Value Engineering and Manufacturing (VEM) which he operated until his retirement in 2008. Until his death, George worked with his son Jim, designing and manufacturing surgical tools.
George enjoyed designing, manufacturing and fixing anything mechanical, renovating homes with his family, fishing, boating, reading and traveling. He was an excellent teacher and inspiration to all.
He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Marie (Mazzenga) Furlong, 5 children, daughters Kim Furlong of Manchester, NH, Laura Moore of Hyannis, MA, Toni-Ann (Moore) Ventresca of Stoughton, MA, sons George Furlong, Jr of Calabasas, CA, James Moore of Holliston, MA, 12 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews and 2 sisters, Elizabeth (Betty) McKinnon of N. Andover, MA, and Barbara Lema of Princeton, MA.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his daughter Ann (Furlong) Porter, a grandson, Brian Moore and two brothers, John Furlong and Gilbert Furlong.
The family will be celebrating his life on May 9, 2015, from 1:07pm to 4pm, watching the Boston Red Sox, eating hot dogs and strawberry ice cream together in Holliston, MA and in Calabasas, CA.
