Frederick “Fred” Esler died peacefully at home on the morning of Sunday,
June 7th, 2009. He was 93. He was the beloved husband of Frances E. Esler
to whom he was married for 69 years. Born in Rochester, NY, he was the son
of Albert F. Esler and Louise (Newbury) Esler. He was the brother of May,
Carl and Al. Fred was a business owner selling and repairing televisions,
radios and record players. He also owned and managed Esler’s Hardware.
During World War II Fred worked on the top secret Manhattan Project. He
worked in Washington D. C., later traveling to Bikini Atoll for the
first bomb tests. His role was with Geiger Counters; measuring and
studying radiation to protect his colleagues from its effects.
On retirement, he moved to Walworth, NY where he helped build a new
home with a large stone fireplace. He planted grapes and made his own
wine. He was active in Rotary Club volunteering at a camp for disabled
children. Fred loved travel, being outdoors, fishing, photography and
telling jokes. He could repair almost anything. In the early nineties,
Fred and Fran moved to Hopkinton, MA to be near family. A generous man
with a great sense of humor, he made new friends easily. He continued
to travel into his late eighties.
He is survived by his wife Frances Esler, daughter Carol Esler, son in
law Don Keiser and grandson Cody Esler Keiser. A memorial service will
be held at the Unitarian Universalist Church in Sherborn, MA on Sunday
