It is with broken hearts that we share the passing of Evelyn “Evie” Dracon of Holliston, Massachusetts. Evie passed away on March 23, 2024, a great loss to all who knew and loved her.
Evie was born on June 9, 1941, to Sylvia (Markos) and Charles (Efstratis) Efthimion, of New Hampshire and Mytilene, Greece. She grew up in Hempstead, Long Island with her two brothers, Peter and Phillip, honoring Greek culture, language, and tradition.
After attending Hempstead High School, Evie studied Spanish at Connecticut College, where she met the love of her life, Harry (Haridimos) Dracon in the spring of 1963. Though Harry proposed after five short weeks of courtship, it took multiple proposals through the mail (Harry deployed to the Mediterranean on a submarine shortly after they met) before Evie finally agreed to marry him. They were married in the fall of that same year. The couple went on to spend 60 wonderful years together, listening to opera, traveling abroad, enjoying food, and loving their many pets including Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, Bleu, Jack, Cheddar, and Brie. They built a beautiful life and family together as Evie cared for their home, raised two grateful children, ran a wonderful tea room and gallery, and was the best Nana to her three granddaughters.
Evie was a talented artist and a wonderful friend. Her family and many friends cherished her warmth, open-heartedness, quick wit, and hilarious, dry sense of humor. She was beautiful. She told phenomenal stories, created beautiful paintings, and made delicious food (including the best Greek salad and baklava ever). Evie was wise and kept us all in line in the best possible way. She loved chocolate, art class, crossword puzzles, and beating us all at Scrabble (she sure was competitive!). While Evie loved many things, the sun rose and set with her husband, Harry. Harry passed away only six months before Evie and she missed him every day they were apart. Family meant everything to them both.
Evie and Harry will forever be missed by their two children, Hara (Russ) Charlier, and Greg (Kacey) Dracon; grandchildren Devon (Matt), Lili, and Zoe; and their much-loved cat, Zasu. Evie is preceded in death by her husband, Harry; parents, Sylvia and Charlie Efthimion; brother, Peter; parents-in-law, Mary and Gregory Dracon and sisters-in-law, Irene Dracon and Emily (John) Gianarkis.
A private memorial service will be held to celebrate Evie’s life. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital at stjude.org or 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN, 38105.
