Holliston-

Vera Murphy, 92, of Holliston, passed away Monday, September 25, 2017. Born in England, she was the daughter of the late Pearla (Geddes) and William Ireland. She was the wife of the late Walter A. Murphy.

Vera was a “British War Bride” who bravely left her family, friends and country to join her husband Walter in the USA after World War II. She was an avid swimmer, knitter, reader and cake-decorator who also enjoyed winning at Scrabble and other games that challenged her intellect. She and Walter enjoyed traveling and visited 48 of the “lower states”, the United Kingdom and Ireland. Whilst living in North Carolina, she actively (and competitively) participated in the Senior Olympics and won in swimming, basketball and cheerleading. But the most important part of her life was her family with whom she and Walter enjoyed spending most of their time and for whom they were always there to help.

Vera is survived by her children, Pauline Murphy of Wytheville, VA, Dennis Murphy of Holliston, Brian Murphy and his wife Diana of Charlotte, NC, John Murphy and his wife Jeanne of Holliston, Theresa Murphy and her husband Michael Cohen of Agawam; and her siblings, Pauline Vickery and Arthur Ireland, both of England. She was the mother of the late Roger Murphy. She also leaves behind 13 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren, as well as her daughter in law, Laurys Murphy of Providence, RI and Roger’s partner, Cynthia Spooner of Hampstead, NC.

A memorial service will take place on Sunday, October 29th at 1:00 PM at St. Michael’s Church, Highland St. Holliston. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association of Massachusetts 309 Waverley Oaks Rd, Waltham, MA 02452 or alz.org Arrangements are under the care of the Chesmore Funeral Home of Holliston, www.ChesmoreFuneralHome.com
